Setting Recovery Email and Phone Number

Created by System Administration, Modified on Tue, 14 Mar 2023 at 04:47 PM by System Administration

This article aims to guide users on how to set their recovery details (i.e. email address and phone number) in their UP Mail account. These details are crucial for Google to:

  1. Notify the account owner should unusual activity be detected on their account.
  2. Contact the user should they be locked out of their account.

For the Information Technology Center (ITC), the recovery details are used to:

  1. Verify if a user requesting for account recovery assistance is indeed the owner of the account.
  2. Send account recovery instructions to the email address listed in the user profile.

This is intended for active students and employees of the University of the Philippines – Los Baños. This guide assumes that the user is already logged into their UP Mail account.

Navigating to the Security Setting

1) Click on your profile icon (upper right corner).

2) Click on 'Manage your Google Account'.

3) If you are using a browser: click on 'Security' found on the left-hand side of your dashboard. If you are using the mobile app: click on the 'Security' tab.

4) Scroll down until you see 'Ways we can verify it's you'. Click on either 'Recovery phone' or 'Recovery email' to begin the process. Please note that Google might ask you to login again to proceed.

Setting Recovery Phone Number

1) Click on 'Recovery phone', then click 'ADD RECOVERY PHONE'.

2) On the pop-up window, type in your phone number. Click 'Next'.

3) Click 'Get Code'.

4) A code will be sent to you via text; type that value in the blank field. Click 'Verify'.

5) The phone number should now be in your profile.

Setting Recovery Email

1) Click on 'Recovery email'.

2) On the next screen, type your chosen recovery email address. Click 'Next'.

3) A verification code will be sent to your designated recovery email; type it in the blank field. Click 'Verify'.

4) The email address should now be in your profile.

Your phone number and/or email address should now be visible when you return to the 'Ways we can verify it's you' section.
